The place where one can experience different kind of behaviors,
each one having different consequences. These consequences may not be the same,
might have different impact on an individual as compared to the organization in
which that person is currently working. Every organization has its own set of
rules and regulations or norms according to which an employee is suppose to
exhibit a certain kind of behavior whether that makes the situation comfortable
or pleasing for the employee or not. If an employee decides to go off track and
exhibit a behavior which is not according to the set of rules laid down then
the behavior is termed as deviant behavior. A behavior is a deviant when
“organization’s customs, policies or internal regulations are violated by an
individual or a group that might jeopardize the well being of an organization
or its citizens” (Robinson and Bennett, 1995)

The workplace is thought to be a place to work and earn a
living to support yourself and your family. Since most of an individual’s time
is spent at work, they should enjoy going there each day. The goal, to perform
the tasks assigned and receive benefits for performing the task and duties
assigned. There are some individuals who are not motivated to do the
task/duties and are just there to receive a pay check. Those particular
individuals tend to create problems for their co-workers, therefore, creating

Workplace negativity can affect any office, at any time.

experiencing negative stress and are more likely to experience dissatisfaction
with their lives and jobs. Some people appear to become negative as a result of
their environment. Disrespectful behavior has very negative effects in the
workplace. Employees who are rude, vulgar or make condescending remarks to
others can significantly diminish office morale. There are those who agree that
personality is a combination of genetic make-up and life experiences. People
who chronically express negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors increase the
likelihood of engaging in destructive actions.

Personality conflicts, interpersonal friction, bad
attitudes normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill negativity with which just about
every manager must contend. But for such a prevalent problem, many managers are
not equipped with the solutions to handle or avoid negativity that may seep
into their departments. A negative attitude that starts with just one employee
can easily infect a department, even an entire company, if not reined in
quickly. When it becomes this prevalent, you
may experience any or all of the following.

1. Negativity is a barrier to positive change.

2. Negativity blocks productivity.

3. Negativity kills morale, which further reduces
productivity.

4. Negative thoughts are generally self-fulfilling;
therefore, the chances of failure occurring in a department or company steeped
in negativity are greater.

Deviance at workplace is something of a great interest to the
present day researches, in other words one can say that is of a great
attraction or it’s one of the top topics as far as research is concerned now a
days. There are various factors that cause workplace deviance. There is no kind
of hard and fast rule that if a certain variable exists only then workplace
deviance would exist otherwise not. Every organization has its own culture
meaning that for one organization deviance at workplace might be caused by a
variable which won’t be the causing variable in another organization. 

The goal isn’t to banish all negative
thoughts from the workplace. There is a difference between “good” negativity
and “bad” negativity. The negativity that is to get rid of is the kind which
merely forecasts doom and gloom, but does nothing to help you avoid it or get
rid of it. Engaging in teamwork requires a clear understanding of positive and
negative behaviors that act as facilitators and barriers to collegial workplace
relationships. Identifying and correcting underlying barriers, while promoting
facilitators, is fundamental to improving care delivery and, ultimately,
clinical outcomes
